Denver, Colorado

Denver, known as the Queen City of the Plains, is the capital of Colorado. Denver sits exactly one mile above sea level and is also known as the Mile High City. It is situated just to the east of the Rocky Mountains, where the foothills of the Rockies meet the western edge of the Great Plains. Denver and its suburbs and surrounding towns span the area from the plains to the foothills.

Denver was founded by prospectors on November 22, 1858 after gold was discovered at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. The city was named for James Denver, who was then the Governor of Kansas Territory. (At that time, Kansas included what is now eastern Colorado.) Further discoveries of gold led to the migration of about 100,000 people to Colorado 1859-60. In 1861, Colorado became a separate territory.

Denver has since been known for mining, railroads, agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, skiing and tourism.

Denver's population is approximately 590,000.
